Some Info: Barbra Bear is part of the Geography topic of class 1 and class 2 at “The Academy International School” in Mallorca. Whenever the children travel with the bear they are encouraged to write about their trip.

Friday 13.02.09 – Barbra comes to our house

Today was Carnival Parade at our school. After lunch we changed into our carnival costumes. We had lots of fun. The parade started at 3 pm at the tennis court and all parents were invited.

clip_image002

When we went home we took Barbra with us. She wore her princess dress. Before lunch we went to Ms Sheila to pack Barbra’s holiday suitcase. She was as excited as we were to go to Florida on holiday.

Saturday 14.02.09 – Flight to Frankfurt (Germany)

On Saturday afternoon we started our holiday trip.  First we had to fly from Palma de Mallorca to Frankfurt (Germany). Before we left we took a picture together with Barbra.

clip_image002[4]clip_image002[6]

At the airport we showed Barbra everything.

clip_image002[8]clip_image002[10]

After we arrived in Frankfurt. We had to pick up our luggage. Our parents had booked a hotel directly at the airport so we only had to go over to the hotel.

clip_image002[12]

The room was great. Barbra had her own bed between us.

Sunday 15.02.09 – Long flight to Orlando (Florida, USA)

clip_image002[14]clip_image002[16]

Today was the day – we would fly to Orlando. First we had a yummy breakfast at the hotel lounge.

After that we relaxed a bit before we went over the airport to check in and meet with our grandparents and our aunt Gabi.

Shortly after we arrived at the gate we saw our plane arriving. It was an Airbus 340-600. This is a cool plane. We explained everything what was happening outside to Barbra.

clip_image002[18]clip_image002[20]

Then our grandparents and our aunt arrived. We were very excited and happy.

The flight to Orlando was extremely long. It took 10 hours. The plane had inseat entertainment; this means that we had our own screens to watch movies. We could choose from several movies and cartoons.

When we finally arrived at the airport of Orlando we first had to go through immigrations. You have to show your passport. If Barbra would have had one, the immigration officer would have given her a stamp too.

Then we picked up our rental car. It was a super speedy SUV.

When we arrived at the house my parents had rented we went directly to the games room. The games room has a pool table, football table and an air hockey table. By then it was already 11 pm and we were extremely tired.

clip_image002[22]

The time difference between Mallorca and Orlando is 6 hours. This means in Mallorca it was 5 am when we went to bed at 11 pm in Orlando.

Monday 16.02.09 – The first vacation day

We (Max and I) started our first vacation day with television before the others woke up. Then we decided to go in the pool and the Jacuzzi. It felt great.

clip_image002[1]clip_image002[3]

While we were in the pool we saw a sky writer plan paint a smile on the sky.

After the pool we were all hungry and had a great breakfast. Later in the day we went to Disney Marketplace. Max and I could pick a present from the big Lego shop.

clip_image002[5]

Tuesday 17.02.09 – Seaworld

On Tuesday we all went to Seaworld. This is a huge zoo with many aquariums.

We went to an underwater observation area to watch dolphins swimming and playing. We also learned about manatees.

clip_image002[7]clip_image002[9]

Then we went to the big killer whale show which was called the “Shamoo Show”.

clip_image002[11]

Wednesday 18.02.09 – Magic Kingdom

On Wednesday we took Barbra to go to Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

clip_image002[13]clip_image002[15]

To get from the parking lot to the entrance of this Disney park you have to take the Monorail. We asked whether we could ride with the driver upfront. Yes, we could and it was really wonderful.

clip_image002[17]clip_image002[19]

Here we took a picture with Barbra and Walt Disney. He was the one that started Disney. Here is a picture of “Barbra Robinson”. There is a huge tree house that you can climb into.  Barbra loved it.

clip_image002[21]clip_image002[23]

We went on several rides throughout the park and had lots of funs. Here, my brother Max and Barbra are relaxing a bit before we went to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” show and ride.

clip_image002[25]clip_image002[27]

Barbra was caught by the pirates but we were able to rescue her. After the rescue we relaxed a bit in rocking chairs on Tom Sawyer’s Island.

clip_image002[29]

Then we went on “Thunder Mountain”. This is a huge roller coaster. We enjoyed it a lot.

Especially for Barbra we watched the “Country Bear Jamboree”. This is a stage show with auto-animatronic figures. My mom explained to me that these are robots which can move and make music.

clip_image002[31]clip_image002[33]

Barbra loved the show. She even went onto the stage.

clip_image002[35]

Then we went to a 3D movie. When you use special glasses it appears as if the movie characters are right in front of you. At first this is scary but then it is very funny.

One of the last things we did was ride the “Goofy’s Barnstormer” roller coaster. We were quite exhausted and hungry so we went to Dennys. Barbra had the biggest meal.

clip_image002[37]clip_image002[39]

Thursday 19.02.09 – Relaxing at the House

Today we enjoyed a relaxing day at the house. We swam, watched TV, played Playstation and also did some homework.

Friday 20.02.09 – Disney’s Animal Kingdom

On Friday we decided to go to Disney Animal Kingdom. This is a theme park and zoo.

clip_image002[41]clip_image002[43]

Max and I went to a mammoth dig site.

Here we observed some giant bats. Then we saw a sleepy tiger.

clip_image002[45]clip_image002[47]

We observed beautifully coloured birds. And here Max compared the size of Barbra to the skull of a hippo.

clip_image002[49]clip_image002[51]

Saturday 21.02.09 – Epcot

On Saturday we went to Disney’s Epcot. Epcot stand for “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”. In this park you can learn a lot about new technologies.

clip_image002[53]clip_image002[55]

My mom explained the following to me: “The symbol of Epcot is a “Pentakis dodecahedron” which represents a molecule (fullerene) made entirely of carbon atoms.“ It do not really understand all of what she told me.

We went to “Turtle Talk with Crush”. This is an interactive show based on the movie “Finding Nemo”. The turtle Crush is actually talking to children and asking them questions.

Here we watched a group of Chinese artists. Most of them were children who could do amazing things.

clip_image002[57]

One of the highlights of Epcot is called “Soarin’”. This is a hang glider simulation. You have the feeling as if you fly over Southern California. When you fly over the ocean you think as if you need to hold up your feet so they don’t get wet. It was truly amazing.

clip_image002[59]clip_image002[61]

We stopped to eat something before we got on the Soarin ride.

Before we left we watched the amazing Fireworks. Unfortunately, we could not take a nice photo of it.

clip_image002[63]

Sunday 22.02.09 – Another relaxing day

Today we enjoyed another relaxing day at the vacation house.

Monday 23.02.09 – Disney Hollywood Studios

On Monday we went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

clip_image002[65]clip_image002[67]

We went on a simulator ride of a Star Wars space flight. This was very funny. A little robot was flying us. It was his first flight with passengers. He often took wrong turns and got us involved in a real space fight.

Before we left we watched an impressive stunt show with cars and motorcycles. It was awesome.

clip_image002[69]

Tuesday 24.02.09 – Gatorland

On Tuesday my mom und dad wanted to do some shopping. So we went with our grandparents to Gatorland.

clip_image002[71]

clip_image002[73]

We fed alligators and watched several interesting animal shows. We also took pictures with alligators.

Wednesday 25.02.09 – Busch Gardens (Tampa)

On Wednesday we drove to Busch Gardens. This is a big zoo with wild animals and wild roller coasters. Busch Gardens is about a one hour drive from Orlando so we started early in the morning and had a breakfast picnic in the car.

clip_image002[75]clip_image002[77]

First we observed gorillas and chimpanzees.

clip_image002[79]clip_image002[81]

The picture shows a gorilla mom with her little baby. The baby is cuddled up on the lap. We looked at the inside of a safari jeep.

clip_image002[83]

clip_image002[85]

and set Barbra on a lion.

clip_image002[87]clip_image002[89]

We went on a sky ride and observed the animals from the sky.

Then Max and I enjoyed a hang gliding flight high in the skies.

clip_image002[91]

We watched an exiting show with different animals (dogs, cats, birds, etc.) that could do amazing tricks.

clip_image002[93]

Before we left we took the “Serengeti Express” – this is a slow train. We saw many animals.

clip_image002[95]clip_image002[97]

clip_image002[99]

Thursday 26.02.09 – Relaxing

Today we spend another day at home relaxing and finally doing most of our homework.

Friday 27.02.09 – Epcot

On Friday we went back to Epcot.

clip_image002[101]clip_image002[107]

This time we examined a real big fire engine.  Max tested the latest cars.

clip_image002[105] clip_image002[109]

We did a “Recycling Game” and later got a certificate via email.

Saturday 28.02.09 – Flying with Dad

On Saturday we went flying with our dad. My dad has a private pilot license. We tried out a Diamond Twin Star. This is a speedy two engine private plane.

clip_image002[111]clip_image002[113]

Max, Barbra and I set in the back of the plane. The seats are very comfortable and we enjoyed it a lot.

clip_image002[115]clip_image002[117]

During the flight my dad took a picture of all of us. The person on the left side is Chat. He is a flight instructor at the Executive airport in Orlando.

clip_image002[119]clip_image002[121]

We flew about an hour around Orlando and saw the shuttle platform at Kennedy Space Center. We also got clearance to fly over the Disney parks. This was truly awesome.

If I had my pilot license and my own plane – I think I would like to have something like the Diamond Twin Star.

Sunday 01.03.09 – Returning to Frankfurt

clip_image002[123]

Today was a really sad day – we were leaving. Even the weather was sad – it was cloudy, rainy and a cold wind.

While everyone was busy packing Max and I played for the last time Playstation, air hockey and pool. Later we went with my mom and dad for a last swim in the pool. Outside it was cold but the pool was nicely heated.

The flight to Frankfurt took about 8 hours. This was very long but Max and I slept a little during the flight. In Frankfurt we had to stay one night in a hotel as there was no flight for us to Mallorca.

The flight to Mallorca was in the morning at 6:30 am. Between 2 and 3 am at night we all woke up. This is called “Jetlag”. Jetlag happens if the body’s clock does not correspond with the actual destination time. By 4:30 am we finally all got up and decided to go over to the airport to check in for our flight at 6:30.

During the next couple of day we still had trouble sleeping. We sometimes woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t go back to sleep for a few hours.

All in all we enjoyed this holiday very much. It was wonderful that Barbra Bear could join us. She was pleasant company.

01.03.09 - Leaving Paradise

Sunday was a very sad day - we had to go home. Even the weather was in agreement with us as we woke up to a cold, windy day and some rain. It was the first morning we had to have breakfast inside the house.

After breakfast everyone started packing and the boys played their final Playstation games, air hockey, pool, …

At around noon we had packed most of our things and since the weather was still cool and every now and then there was some drizzle the boys decided not to go back one last time to a Disney park. Instead Felix, Max, Thomas and myself went for a last swim in the pool. It was wonderful.

IMG_5395

We had enjoyed a wonderful vacation - this time together with Thomas parents and his sister.

A very big THANK YOU to Susan and Alan, the owners of this beautiful vacation villa in Calabay Park. The house is wonderful. It is exclusively decorated and provides ample space. Since our stay last year, Susan and Alan had upgraded a lot of things in and around the house. To us it felt like coming home again.

The boys were very sad when we finally had to leave around 5 pm and they decided we need to come back.

26.02.09 - Flying the DA42 – Twinstar

Today, it was my personal day of a treat. When we were still in Mallorca, I sent an eMail to Air Orlando to see if it was possible to rent an aircraft and go out flying a bit.  Air Orlando has the “normal” selection of Cessna’s and Piper’s and also some nice airplanes like a Cirrus SR22 and a Diamond DA42 Twinstar.

I was interested in the Twinstar as I never had the chance to fly one. So today at around 15:00, I went of with my licenses and headed to Orlando Executive airport.

On the way, I got some nice views of Orlando downtown.

IMG_5197 IMG_5196

Chad was already waiting for me and after going over the airspace, the V-speeds, etc. we went to check out the airplane. After a thorough preflight and refueling, we started up the engines and went into the air.

IMG_5198

The DA42 is a really nice airplane. The engine has FADEC, so no prop and mixture controls. The airplane is made out of composites and fiberglass. The seats are roomy and comfortable. It has a glass cockpit with 2 big screens in front of the pilot and copilot and is just a new airplane.

IMG_5199 IMG_5209

We took of and flew over Lake Apopka to do some maneuvers. We did some medium steep turns (15, 30 and 45 degrees). We did some slow flight and attempted some stalls. However, it is really difficult to stall the airplane. We only got into some buffeting and that was it. Stall recovery was no problem, you just advance the power, lower the nose and that’s it.

The G1000 instrumentation is really impressive.

IMG_5200 IMG_5201

We flew to Leesburg (KLEE) to do some touch- and go’s. And after two rounds, we flew south, orienting ourselves at the HW27. Just before the crossing between the HW27 and the I4, we looked for the house in Plumoso Loop and we found it.

IMG_5212 IMG_5214

On our way back, we crossed Disneyworld and had a good view of the theme parks below us

IMG_5216  IMG_5225

IMG_5227 IMG_5221

So, thanks Chad, it was a really nice experience

IMG_5228

25.02.09 – Busch Gardens, Tampa

This year we decided to pay Busch Gardens a visit. Busch Gardens is an interesting amusement park – it features wild animals and really wild roller coasters.

IMG_4955 IMG_4958

The drive from Orlando to Tampa is about one hour. When we arrived at the park there was already a lot going on.

IMG_4959 IMG_4960

Busch Gardens has an impressive vegetation and awesome flowers (above are some pictures of beautiful orchids).

IMG_4963 IMG_4965

IMG_4969 IMG_4979

Our first stop was at the alligator area.

IMG_4984 IMG_4985

Then we went on to observe chimpanzees and gorillas. The animals have wonderful enclosures. The picture above on the left shows a Gorilla mother with her baby snuggled on her lap.

IMG_4987 IMG_4995

On our way to Egypt Gabi could ride her first roller coaster. Unfortunately the boys did not meet the height requirements quite yet.

IMG_5001 IMG_5003

While Gabi enjoyed herself rotating and twisting we visited a pyramid.

IMG_5006 IMG_5008

IMG_5009 IMG_5010

IMG_5015 IMG_5016

On our way to the “Edge of Africa” the boys and Barbra Bear tried out a safari jeep. We saw a lazy lion and and a fast and elegant moving hippo (under water).

IMG_5018 IMG_5020

Then we went on the Sky ride. It allows you to view a lot of the park from the air.

IMG_5023 IMG_5029

Max was so excited he held his arms up during most of the ride.

IMG_5033 IMG_5036

After that we visited the new tiger enclosure. Well, at that point we also would have liked to lie down and nap a bit in the warm sun.

When we looked at flyers from Busch Gardens the boys noticed that they had a new area called “Jungula” which features something like a glider flight.

IMG_5037 IMG_5039

IMG_5042 IMG_5050

IMG_5053 IMG_5059

There was no holding them any longer when they found the signs leading to “Jungula”. After they were fitted into their gliders they roared through the air. When they came back the lady who helped them asked how they liked it and Max said: “It was totally awesome!”.

IMG_5060 IMG_5061

The boys enjoyed themselves a bit more climbing high in the sky through tunnels.

IMG_5063 IMG_5067

IMG_5068 IMG_5069

Then we encountered some imaginary, wonderful animals and listed to a band performing.

IMG_5073 IMG_5075

IMG_5076 IMG_5078

Further we encountered many birds and even discovered a few hatching dragons.

IMG_5080 IMG_5085

Then the boys drove a bit with Barbra Bear and Max enjoyed a dragon ride.

IMG_5086 IMG_5088

IMG_5093 IMG_5099

IMG_5111 IMG_5154

IMG_5157 IMG_5156

Busch Gardens is an impressive wonderful park. We watched a nice animal show and went on to the Rhino Rally.

IMG_5159 IMG_5163

IMG_5168 IMG_5173

The Rhino Rally combines a jeep safari and a boat ride.

IMG_5176 IMG_5187

IMG_5188 IMG_5185

Then we caught the last “Serengeti Train”. It was a wonderful day that everyone fully enjoyed.

On the way out, we went another time on the Gwazi wooden roller coaster. The boys enjoyed another great ride, however we were still shaking from the bumpy ride on our way out.

23.02.09 – Disney Hollywood Studios

Today we – that is Felix & Max, Thomas and myself – decided to go to Hollywood Studios.

IMG_4742 IMG_4746

The rest of the clan enjoyed a peaceful, quiet day. The boys (finally) were eager to join us in the Star Wars ride, a nice simulator experience.

IMG_4753 IMG_4754

On the way in there are always funny characters performing a little act.

First we went on “The Great Movie Ride”. This ride goes through famous movies, such as gangster movies of the 1930s, Alien, westerns, Tarzan, and many more.

IMG_4760 IMG_4764

After that we had to get on the “Star Tours Experience”. As serious SciFi fans we love this ride. The boys enjoyed it also and wanted to go right back.

We decided to first visit the 3D Muppet Show and then come back to see how long the wait would be. The way to the theater was filled with funny Muppet Movie announcements.

IMG_4765 IMG_4766

IMG_4770 IMG_4771

IMG_4773 IMG_4774

We decided to first visit the 3D Muppet Show and then come back to see how long the wait would be. The way to the theater was filled with funny Muppet Movie announcements.

I think we have seen this show each time we visited Orlando but we still like it – 3D is great.

After a bit of walking around we went to the “Journey into Naranja”. So far we haven’t seen the movie. It seems to be really interesting (in the meantime we bought the DVD).

IMG_4786 IMG_4809

After that we had to hurry to get to the “Lights, Motors, Action! Stunt Show” in time. There are only two shows during the day and although the stadium is big we were lucky to get some seats way up.

IMG_4835 IMG_4846

Soon after we sat down the show started.

IMG_4868 IMG_4919

Loud music, squeeking tires and gasoline – the boys loved it.

IMG_4922 IMG_4937

The motorcycle that races through fire is always a highlight. They show later how many layers of protective clothing the rider is wearing so he does not burn.

IMG_4944 IMG_4948

Then we did another round of the "Star Tours Experience”.

We called the rest of the clan to find out what their dinner plans were. They had none so we agreed to meet at “Chillies”.

While you wait for your food there is someone to make nice things out of balloons. Max was really proud of his read motorcycle.

Felix got a sword and should all of us his “I am a mean pirate” face.

IMG_4950 IMG_4951

This was another super day. We have less than a week and time seems to really accelerate now. First you wait sooooo long until the holidays are there and then – whoosh – they fly by as fast as lightning.

20.02.09 – Animal Kingdom

Today the weather was somewhat strange. There was not a cloud in the sky but it was really cold (around 16 degrees Celsius).

IMG_4528 IMG_4530

We decided to pay Magic Kingdom a visit. Barbra Bear was really excited to see some the animals.

IMG_4538 IMG_4537

Our first stop was at a 3D movie theater where they showed “It’s tough to be a bug”. You get special glasses that will give you the impression that the movie characters are right in front of you. It sometimes seems as if you can touch them. This 3D movie actually also used your sense of smell and during parts of the movie it felt as if bugs and rodents were crawling under your seat. It is quite something if you can see, feel and smell your movie.

IMG_4541 IMG_4544

IMG_4543 IMG_4548

After a short stop we went on to the dinosaur dig. While the boys tried to excavate a mammoth Barbra Bear enjoyed the warm Florida sunshine. Then we watched some lazy monkeys who were sunbathing in their tree.

IMG_4551 IMG_4557

IMG_4561 IMG_4568

Our journey went on to a jungle. We learned about strange lizards, giant bats, tigers, and many colorful birds.

IMG_4573 IMG_4576

Before we watched a bird show we learned that owls cannot smell. They actually eat skunks and can turn their heads 270 degrees.

IMG_4597 IMG_4601

On our way to an African safari we passed an underwater hippo watch point. It is amazing how elegant these huge animals can float under water. Max was comparing the size of a hippo scull by holding Barbra next to it.

IMG_4615 IMG_4619

IMG_4628 IMG_4630

Our last ride was an African safari. You actually board a huge safari jeep and drive through the African savannah. There were real trees brought from Africa. We saw more hippos and crocodiles.

By the time we finished the safari it was almost 5 pm. It got really cold and we were glad the park closed at five. Normally when we get back to the car we open the doors for a bit to allow it to cool down. Today we went right in to warm ourselves up.

It was a really impressive day that we all enjoyed very much. While I just type up this days events, the boys fight a fierce air hockey and kickers match in the games room.

21.02.09 – Epcot

Today we decided to go to Epcot. Roger and Kati wanted to go to the beach in Cocoa.

Epcot stands for: Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. I love Epcot because there are so many things to learn and explore.

IMG_4635 IMG_4636

We first went on the Spaceship Earth ride. This ride explains the advances in communication from prehistoric to the 21st century. I just read that the “ball” is a Pentakis dodecahedron it resembles a carbon atom.

IMG_4640

Then we went through the “Innoventions” pavilions which focus on technical advancements and their practical applications. We tried out a great driving game. Max and Gabi made first place while Thomas and Felix came in second.

This year we wanted to try out Soarin’. This ride gives you the impression as if you are hang-gliding through the skies of California. When we arrived close to 2:30 pm the stand-by waiting was 80 minutes. So we decided to get Fast Pass tickets. Well, we were lucky to get some of the last tickets. The park closes at 9 pm with a famous fireworks. Our Soarin’ fast pass tickets said we should be coming back between 8:15pm and 9:00 pm. At that point we weren’t sure whether we wanted to wait that long.

IMG_4646 IMG_4647

IMG_4649 IMG_4653

As we were already in the building we went on the “Living with the Land” ride.

IMG_4655 IMG_4658

This is a boat ride through a green house that focuses on new technologies to make agriculture more efficient and environmentally safe.

IMG_4661 IMG_4665

So we went on to Nemo and Friends and watched “Turtle Talk with Crush”. The boys sat in front and Crush asked Max about his name and where he came from.

IMG_4667 IMG_4671

Then we went on to observe the great fish tanks and also learned how divers enter the fish tanks.

IMG_4673 IMG_4674

It was close to 5 pm when we got hungry. So we decided to use the boat to go over to Morocco, walk by Japan to go to the American A
dventure. This is part of the “World Showcase”. We got some coffee with muffins and chocolate chips and relaxed for a couple of minutes.

IMG_4681 IMG_4696

On our way back we stopped in China to watch some very talented acrobats.

Then we went on the “Mission to Mars” (- we did the less thrilling ride without the spins). The boys enjoyed it so much that we did it another time while Gabi went on the Fast Track.

We went back to check the waiting time on Soarin’. It was around 7:30 pm. The waiting line was 80 Minutes.

IMG_4712 IMG_4713

IMG_4714 IMG_4715

So we decided to eat dinner before our fast pass time at 8:15 pm.

Well at last it was time for Soarin’. This is quite an experience – it is super.

After we left that exciting ride it was close to the fire works at 9pm. The fire works is called “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” – it is super. The globe which plays an important part of this show is very impressive (see the linked WIKI article).

All in all – this was a very exciting wonderful day which we enjoyed very much.

19.02.09 – Dinner Feast

Today we just lounged around and did nothing. We watched some TV, read books, played air hockey, went shopping, …

But in the evening we rewarded ourselves to a magnificent dinner.

IMG_4518 IMG_4519

During one of our shopping trips at Publix we noticed that they had Alaska King Crab Legs on sale. Since everybody in our family loves seafood – well, except Felix. He really hates it. Once he told his brother Max: “… see I told that you become as dumb as a post if you eat fish…”.

IMG_4520 IMG_4525

The boys decided that they would like to eat a real American pizza. For Gabi, Kati and Roger we found some Boston clam chowder for an appetizer.

Then he enjoyed the crab legs with baked potatoes, sour cream and a tasty chardonnay. It was super delicious.

17.02.09 – Seaworld

After a hearty breakfast we set off to Seaworld.

IMG_4229 IMG_4232

IMG_4234 IMG_4236

The weather was perfect – there was no cloud in the sky.

IMG_4238 IMG_4240

IMG_4241 IMG_4245

We learned about manatees, observed crocodiles, and watched some shows.

IMG_4252 IMG_4253

The most impressive show was “Believe”, the orca show.

IMG_4258 IMG_4264

Well, we were not alone. The show is amazing. Its choreography is simply breath-taking.

IMG_4292 IMG_4329

Seven huge killer whale who are world class performers.

IMG_4331 IMG_4340

After the show we saw strange looking leafy seahorses, sharks, penguins, and many more.

IMG_4341 IMG_4342

Then we had to go to “Kraken”. This is the second-tallest roller coaster in Florida. It has floorless seats, inversions and moments of weightlessness. Three time during the ride one is underground.

Felix and Max watch awestruck how their aunt went to go on the ride. While we waited they wondered if they would go on the ride once they fulfilled height requirements. So when Gabi came back in one piece and said it was great Felix and Max both decided that they would do it as soon as they had the correct height.

IMG_4345 IMG_4348

After that we came by the “Journey to Atlantis”. This is a water ride with a nearly 60 feet plunge. Felix, Max, Thomas and Gabi decided to go on this ride. I still remembered the soaking from last year so I decided not to go.

Max and Gabi were OK, but Thomas and Felix got completely wet trousers.

At home the boys told us several times how deep the plunge was. It was a fun day and we had seen a lot.

16.02.09 – Slow Start

On Monday everyone slept in – even Felix slept super long. Then we carefully tested the pool temperature. It was perfect.

We decided to first jump into the pool and then have breakfast.

IMG_4185 IMG_4187

I hadn’t finished this sentence when the boys ran to the toilet undressed and asked for their swimming trunks.

IMG_4190  IMG_4194

Soon the whole family joint in. We had lots of fun. While we were in the pool we saw a sky writer plane. A smiley that was exactly how we felt.

IMG_4205 IMG_4203

After taking a shower we were very hungry. Felix and Max were  especially hungry. After breakfast we decided to go to Disney Market Place.

IMG_4210 IMG_4214

Max was allowed to pick something from the Lego store (his birthday was the week before). He decided on a beautiful airplane. Felix, although his birthday was in November, could also select a great Lego present.

IMG_4220 IMG_4221

On the way home we went food shopping. Thomas got scampi and cooked them with a thyme-lemon marinade.

IMG_4222 IMG_4223

Felix and Max wanted some grilled chicken and I finally got my favorite food – SUSHI. After dinner we sat a bit and discussed what to do on the next couple of days.

When we asked the boys what they wanted to do the next day they said: “We don’t care”. Then I said that we would go shopping the whole day so they quickly decided that they wanted to go to Seaworld.

IMG_4226

After yet another round of Playstation it was “beddy time” for the boys. They changed Barbra Bear into her pyjamas and soon the boys and the bear were sound asleep.

18.02.09 – Magic Kingdom

Today we decided to visit Magic Kingdom. After everyone got up we had to first jump into the pool and the Jacuzzi of course. Then a hearty breakfast was needed.

… finally at around noon we were ready to leave.

IMG_4349 IMG_4350

The boys were excited and changed Barbra bear’s cloths at least three time. At the end they settled for the school uniform and insisted that they also would wear their school t-shirts.

IMG_4359 IMG_4376

The boys still remembered the Disney Monorail which transports visitors from the parking lot to the park entrance.

Entering the Monorail station, we asked, if we could sit in the front cabin of the train. Of course, it was possible.

IMG_4387 IMG_4395

Barbra got a chance to experience the whole journey in the best seat of the train.

IMG_4400 IMG_4408

On the entrance of Magic Kingdom, bronze statues of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse are sitting on a bench. Of course Barbra had to inspect it all.

IMG_4411 IMG_4415

Next stop on our tour was Adventureland. The first attraction is the Treehouse of the Swiss family Robinson.

IMG_4419 IMG_4420

IMG_4425 IMG_4430

Next was a ride with “Flying Carpets”. Barbra has never seen flying carpets and was really excited. At the beginning a camel was spitting water on the people and we all got a short hit by cold water.

IMG_4432 IMG_4433

Then came a little scary part. We went to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” and in a small boat we were soon enclosed by firing canons, wild pirates and the search for “Captain Jack Sparrow”.

IMG_4441 IMG_4442

Barbra was caught by some pirates and placed into prison but the boys freed her almost immediately. Other pirates were not so lucky…

IMG_4443 IMG_4447

We then discovered “Tom Sawyer’s Island”. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn put all kinds of signs around the island. However, they could not have been students of The Academy as they would never have passed any spelling test.

IMG_4450 IMG_4451

We explored all the dark caves on the island and Barbra was a really good guide. The caves are arranged like an underground labyrinth and it is not easy to find a way out. Luckily, we soon saw the sun shining into the cave and we immediately knew, where the exit was.

IMG_4452 IMG_4454

IMG_4457 IMG_4460

“Thunder Mountain Railways” was finally repaired and we dared a ride. Barbra had concerns about her safety, so she preferred to stay with the grandparents outside the ride (along with our backpacks and other stuff).

IMG_4462 IMG_4466

To get our heart rate (and adrenalin levels) down again, we went to the “Bear Jumbaroo” and watched singing and dancing bears. Barbra was really delighted as she also had a chance to stand on stage.

 IMG_4468 IMG_4475

Next we went into a 3D theater looking at a fun movie, where Donald screwed up the magic orchestra of Mickey. Barbra got her 3D glasses and fascinated by the show. Actually it was not only a 3D show but also had wind, smells and all kinds of sensory effects.

IMG_4480 IMG_4481

An all time favorite ride of the boys is the “Goofy’s Barnstormer”. This is a rollercoaster and Barbra came with us!!

IMG_4483 IMG_4486

 IMG_4494 IMG_4503

Last ride for the day was the Gokart Testdrive. We got into our high-speed (at least according to the sound) Gokart and went on tour.

IMG_4506

On our way out, it was already getting dark. However, we had a couple of nice views at Cinderella’s castle and the lighting.

IMG_4509 IMG_4510

We were all very tired and very hungry, so we decided to go out for some burgers. We all had some Cheeseburgers, Mushroom Burgers, Salads and finally we were all stuffed and ready to relax from a nice day.

So when Gabi came ba
ck in one piece and said it was great Felix and Max both decided that they would do it as soon as they had t
he correct height.

15.02.09 – Our Arrival in Paradise

As Thomas wrote earlier we had a super nice flight. The boys were – as usual – super good on that long, long flight and we cleared customs in record time. A very big THANKS to Felix and Max – we are really proud of them.

Max was great when the immigration officer asked him how Max knew that is was his picture on his passport. Max thought about it and then said: “This is really easy – I am the only one with glasses, so it must be me”. If Barbra – the school bear – would have had a passport, the immigration officer would have given her a stamp as well. We have to ask the school, if they could provide something like a passport.

Then we cleared customs and went on to get our car. This time we have a really nice SUV. At first, Felix was a bit sad because the car had “only” five seats, but after Thomas demonstrated the acceleration Felix was all for it.

Roger & Kati und Gabi also got an SUV. We first decided that they would drive directly to the villa while we went shopping but as we still had lots of time before the stores closed we went to the house first.

It felt like “coming home” to us. As soon as we stopped the car in the driveway the boys woke up. It only took them a couple of seconds before the were wide awake again and very, very excited to get into the house.

Susan and Alan’s villa is super. Since last year a lot has changed.

IMG_4174 IMG_4172

There was also a wonderful Valentine’s Welcome Package for us that had all the essential things we needed.

IMG_4176IMG_4178

Alan told Thomas already that there is a brand new high definition TV – this has super quality. Outside there is a new table and new chairs and many, many more new things.

While I started unpacking the boys ran through all rooms and were very impatiently awaiting the arrival of their grandparents and Gabi. Thank goodness they arrived really soon. It did not take long after the boys showed the whole beautiful house to Roger & Kati and Gabi that the first air hockey and kicker matches took place.

Thomas and I went shopping so we did not have to go in the morning. When we returned the Felix and Max beat Gabi and Kati in kickers. We had brought some blue corn chips and hot salsa as well as some bear and everybody loved it.

IMG_4184

At around 11 pm Felix and Max went to bed and by the time their head touched the pillow they were sound asleep. The rest of the family stayed up a little longer and when we all finally went to bed we were also asleep within seconds.

It feels great to be back here… and to have the whole family together with us.

13.02.2009 - Finally T minus 1 Day

Tomorrow is the day! I think I should be panic-stricken but at the moment everything feels normal (maybe I just don’t realize it yet). Well at the moment there is heavy working on the terrace in front of our office. They are finishing (hopefully) everything today - which means that they will be carrying tons of dirt through our office and downstairs.

I am in the processing of trying to think about everything we will need during our vacation time. I even have started to pack a bit.

Felix and Max were over-excited this morning. Felix was unable to sit still. He is so excited to go on holidays with his grandparents and Gabi. I guess Max was not awake enough yet to join in.

The boys will celebrate carnival at school today which means they will eat lots of sugar and other stuff so they can be bouncing off walls by the evening.

Our cat “Krümmel” seems to realize that something is going on. She is very, very affectionate right now. Big, big thanks to Wolfgang who will make sure she is not alone and gets plenty of food, play and tender loving care - THANK YOU.

The other day Thomas talked with Alan, the owner of this beautiful villa were we stay in Orlando (http://www.floridavillas360.com/). Alan was still at the villa and said that they have improved a lot in the house. We are so excited - last year we had such a wonderful time.

Well, I guess I should get started now. Calvin (from the cartoon “Calvin & Hobbs) uses to say: “I am waiting for the right kind of inspiration…” this is equivalent to “last minute panic”.

09.02.09 - T minus 5 Days

Like every year we are finally getting ready for our holidays. Saturday still feels as if it is years away…. - I guess once I really start packing I will regret it and would wish there were a couple more days available to finish the job.

Again this year we visit Orlando but this time with Roger & Kati (the boys’ grand parents) and Thomas’ sister Gabi. Felix and Max are super excited. They want to show everything they already know to Roger, Kati and Gabi.

Another guest that will accompany us on this trip is Barbara Bear. Barbara Bear is a teddy bear which belongs to the boys’ school. The children are encouraged to take Barbara Bear or Barnaby Bear with them on trips. The reports they write about their trips are part of the Geography lessons. There is a big map before the headmasters office which shows were in the world the bears currently are and where they have been. Usually there are postcards and pictures from the last trips the bears have made. Felix and Max are very excited to be allowed to take Barbara Bear with them and they are already planning what they want to show to Barbara.

Again this year we will stay in Susan & Alans wonderful vacation villa in Calabay Park. Here is a link to their new website: http://www.floridavillas360.com/. We love that house and the boys have already scheduled Air Hockey matches upon our arrival.

Every morning I check the forecasted weather reports for Orlando. For our arrival the temperature is forecast to be around 24 degrees Celsius - just perfect.
